Tips
To Make Every Day Fun, Engaging, and Successful!

Teaching your kindergartener at home can be enjoyable and meaningful, but it can also be very challenging. In order to make each day fulfilling and successful, it is important to follow a few basic principles.

-
Follow the Child: If your child shows curiosity or interest in a certain subject or theme, use that interest as a focus.

-
Read Alouds: Use read alouds to inspire a love of reading! They build vocabulary, background knowledge, and provide a model for fluency and expressive reading. Choose a focus book for the week, alongside interdisciplinary activities.

-
Creative Activities: Incorporate these during weekly lessons to promote exploration, engagment, and elaboration for any subject, including drawing, coloring, painting, crafting, building, or another form of creative expression. *See 5E Learning Model.

-
Unstructured Play: Allow time for your child to take part in unstructured play. This helps to expand their imagination, and to use their creative and/or physical energy. Have dramatic play items on hand.

-
Teach in Nature: Whenever possible find ways to teach outside. It stimulate a child's mind, but also increases their interest in a subject and their intrinsic motivation to learn.

-
Flexible Schedule: Keep a schedule that you can work with, so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. Just be sure to dedicate a few hours for lessons approximately 4x week.
