The Writer's Workshop
Several decades ago, the Writer's Workshop was developed by Lucy Calkins. The big idea is to inspire children to be lifelong writers. Children are encouraged to write from their own lives, alongside a consistent writing process that includes mini lessons, independent writing, and conferring. There is nothing like watching young children make sense of the world around them through writing! The Writer's Workshop model works. I have it used it for over 11 years. In an effort to make mini lessons more meaningful and relative, I designed a Yearly Kindergarten Writing Curriculum with 9 simple mini lessons per unit across 10 units.
Whether you follow a 4 or 5 day school week, it’s important to review, practice, pause, and assess. A writing unit shouldn’t feel constrained and forced. Students need flow and flexibility to develop writing skills alongside curiosity and motivation. You determine how to best schedule the lessons within a three week period and allow your students time to become successful writers. *Please note that these writing units occur in a specific sequence that follows the Kindergarten student throughout the year.
