Spiral with Math
Math is like a spiral because its concepts build upon each other in cycles, constantly revisiting foundational ideas with increasing complexity.
The Big 4 for Kindergarten
1. Numbers & Quantity: counting by ones & tens to 100, counting on, counting forwards & backwards; subitizing within 5; comparing & ordering numerals & groups of objects to 10; numeral identification to 20; writing numerals to 20; composing & decomposing teen numbers/numerals with a base of 10.
2. Algebra: computing addition & subtraction with objects or numerals within 10; using story problems.
3. Measurement: understanding positional words; classifying objects; understanding & utilizing length, width, height, & weight.
4. Geometry: recognizing & making patterns; recognizing, describing, & creating basic 2-D & 3-D shapes.
*TIP: use Calendar time to incorporate daily spiral activities!
