The Daily 5 framework develops foundational literacy skills, student independence, and stamina alongside a daily routine of 5 principle activities. By providing these activities in simple, organized learning centers children will be pleasantly engaged (even while small reading group instruction is happening).

Offer approximately 6 activities per center (depending on class size) with thematic or seasonal adaptations. Some materials should always be made available, such as alphabet cards, book boxes, sand trays, writing paper, etc. Keep centers streamlined and differentiated so that students can confidently choose and use the activities. Design them thoughtfully and aesthetically. For instance, use neutral colored baskets or trays for each activity. Think organically! Change the centers out monthly to keep students interested and challenged, especially as their reading abilities strengthen.
