Tips
To Make Every Day Fun, Engaging, and Successful!

Teaching your kindergartner at home can be enjoyable and meaningful, but it can also be very challenging. In order to make each day fulfilling and successful, it is important to follow a few basic principles.

-
Routine Schedule: Maintain a consistent homeschool schedule and rhythm so that you can offer your child the most success. I recommend providing up to 1 hour for each reading, writing, science/social studies, or math lesson, approximately 4x week. Keep direct instruction between 10-20 mins and utilize the remainder of the time for independent work, learning centers, creative play, and exploring the world (including field trips). *Be sure to comply with your state's home school laws for educational instruction and activities.

-
Follow the Child: If your child shows curiosity or interest in a certain subject or theme, use that interest as a focus.

-
Read Alouds: Use read alouds to inspire a love of reading! They build vocabulary, background knowledge, and provide a model for fluency and expressive reading. Choose a focus book for the week, alongside interdisciplinary activities.

-
Creativity: Integrate creative activities during weekly lessons to promote exploration, engagement, and elaboration for any subject, including drawing, painting, crafting, building, or another form of creative expression. *See 5E Learning Model.

-
Unstructured Play: Allow time for your child to take part in unstructured play. This helps to expand their imagination, and to use their creative and/or physical energy. Have dramatic play items on hand, and for additional engagement, include thematic props!

-
Teach in Nature: Whenever possible find ways to teach outside. It stimulate a child's mind, but also increases their interest in a subject and their intrinsic motivation to learn.

-
Field Trips: Field trips transform abstract concepts into tangible memories for children by engaging all of their senses. They are a great way for children to explore and engage with the world. Connect field trips with current themes whenever possible!
